On Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM, units from North Canaan, Falls Village, Lakeville, Norfolk, Cornwall, Goshen, Sharon, Sheffield MA, Great Barrington MA and New Marlbough met at North Canaan Firehouse to go over everyone's roll in the drill which was to fill the 120,000 gallon town pool with water from the Housatonic River drafted near the State DOT garage. An engine from Falls Village and Great Barrington drafted from 3 porta tanks set up in line on the road near the town pool. These units each supplied a 5 inch line into the pool. Jet siphons were run from the center tank to each of the side tanks were the engines were drafting from. An engine from Norfolk was staged at the dump site.
An engine from North Canaan and New Marlbough set up at two fill sites at the State DOT garage. Both engines had trouble drafting from the 3 dry hydrants there. Canaan's engine was able to get a draft and feed a 5 inch out to a manifold were it was split to two 5 inch lines. One truck at a time was filled, but the second truck was hooked up and ready to be filled. Norfolk's engine replaced New Marlbough's engine and was able to get a draft and feed via 4 inch line to a manifold were it split to a 4 inch line with a 5 inch adapter and second 5 inch line so that a second truck could be hooked up while the first was filling. Both engines had trouble keeping prime but were able to keep up filling tankers from North Canaan, Norfolk, Lakeville, Cornwall, Goshen, Sharon, Sheffield and New Marlbough.
Due to the trouble at the fill site, it took 2 1/2 hours to fill the pool at an average rate of 800 gallons per minute. The rain held off for the most part, with only a few minor showers. It was a good drill were problems arose that required all the crews to work together to overcome.
